Photosensitive seizures

A very small number of people may have a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that can appear in video games. This can happen even to people with no history of seizures or epilepsy, who may have an undiagnosed condition.

The symptoms include light-headedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of the arms or legs, disorientation, confusion and a momentary loss of awareness. Seizures can also cause a loss of consciousness or convulsions, and injury from falling or striking nearby objects.

Stop playing at once and see a doctor if you have any of these symptoms. Parents should watch their children play and ask them about these symptoms; children and teenagers are more likely to have them. If you or anyone in your family has had seizures or epilepsy, ask a doctor before playing.

In Hitflag

The game shows things that can trigger these symptoms:

  • lightning flashes during storms in the Rain Noir look, whose weather can turn stormy by itself;
  • bright flashes when cars collide, steal the flag or use power-ups;
  • flickering neon and fast-moving lights, especially in the Synthwave look;
  • fast camera motion and camera shake on hits.

Lowering the risk

  • In Settings, set Weather to steady rain or dry, neither of which has lightning, or play in another look than Rain Noir.
  • Turn Camera shake off, and choose the high chase camera (C) for calmer motion.
  • Play in a well-lit room, sit as far from the screen as you comfortably can, and play on a smaller screen if you are sensitive.
  • Do not play when you are tired or short of sleep, and take a break of 10 to 15 minutes every hour.

Motion and strain

  • If you feel dizzy, sick or uncomfortable, stop and rest until it passes. The driver's seat camera moves the most; the chase cameras move less.
  • If your hands, wrists, arms or eyes get tired or sore, stop and rest. See a doctor if the discomfort continues.
  • Gamepad rumble can be turned off in Settings.
